Adhd Medications - What Are The Benefits?

by Michelle Robbins

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly referred to as ADHD, is a behavioral disorder that affects approximately 3-5 percent of the world's population. The symptoms of ADHD include a consistent pattern of impulsiveness, hyperactivity and inattention. It affects twice as many boys as girls and usually begins during childhood.

Today, there are a large number of ADHD drugs that are available. However, the use of the prescription ADHD medications is controversial. These medications have side effects that can range from mild to severe. Some people feel that there isn't enough evidence to show that the drugs help stop ADHD. Because of these factors, many people look into alternative therapies.

One important thing to mention when talking about both symptoms and treatment of ADHD is the big effect that diet has on the symptoms of ADHD. There have been a variety of studies that have been conducted on the effects of sugar on ADHD. While many believe that large amounts of sugar will increase the symptoms of ADHD, these studies actually show that this is not the case. There actually seems to be no effect from sugar on either symptoms or treatment of ADHD.

Despite popular perception, sucrose doesn't actually affect ADHD symptoms. However, artificial food coloring does affect ADHD symptoms. Artificial food coloring, which is found in almost all packaged foods and drinks, is unnecessary for a healthy diet and is proven to improve ADHD health if removed. Some studies also indicate that the Omega 3 and Omega 6 supplement oils and pills help with ADHD symptoms.

The main explanation for the cause of pediatric ADHD is through the genes. This is said to represent approximately 75 percent of all children with ADHD. Other reasons that may play a part in this disorder are environmental. Included in the environmental reasons are the mother smoking or drinking while pregnant. Also, problems during labor and birth or a premature baby have been linked to what may cause ADHD.

Whatever method you choose to treat your child's ADHD, it's important to keep informed of the new medications and natural remedies out there. Natural remedies often do not have the side affects that prescription ADHD medications can have. This can lead to alternative medicine being a better option that your typical Western medicine.
