Short-term Health Insurance - Know Your Options

by Daniel Wright

When they think of health insurance, what people typically have in mind is traditional health insurance, with office visits, prescription coverage, and co-payments. This type of health insurance is not always available, however. Maybe you're in transition between one job and another; or perhaps you work part-time, or with a "temp" agency which does not offer full health coverage; or you may be either attending school or just graduating. In circumstances such as this, traditional health insurance is sometimes unavailable. If you cannot afford a traditional health plan, but you'd like some coverage in case an accident or emergency occurs, your best option is short-term health insurance.

Short-term health insurance will fill the void in health insurance coverage which might happen for many reasons, including the ones mentioned above. The concept of short-term health insurance is built right into its name; it's a short-term solution that offers short-term coverage, with the idea that some time, you'd start or resume your conventional health insurance coverage. It's made for those who'd like coverage in the event of injury or accident and covers just emergency or serious medical costs, like x-rays, intensive care, ambulance fees, and some hospital care. Although the policies vary, these are usually typical of short-term health insurance coverage. But short-term health insurance doesn't cover normal doctor visits, or pre-existing conditions. If you want this sort of coverage, think about getting a conventional health insurance policy or maybe considering some other options.

You will find a range of prices for health insurance. The monthly premium is dependent on the coverage and deductible you choose. Deductible amounts typically range from $250 to $5000, and the premium may go from $25 to $200 monthly. The pay-out total will be capped at one or two million dollars. Short-term polices come in different terms starting at 30 days, but rarely go beyond 12 months.

How do you find short-term health insurance? A simple Internet search will yield a number of companies that offer short-term health insurance coverage. Researching online will also afford you the chance to compare different insurers and different policies via instant health insurance quotes.
