The Effects Of Joining The Military
We all at some point of time watched a military movie, whether it’s been, “Hamburger Hill”, “Saving Private Ryan” or a Chuck Norris action pack film that took place in Vietnam that raised curiosity of what it is like being in the military. Frankly, we can not base what we have seen in motion pictures deter us from what it’s like to be an American Soldier for Uncle Sam. The military is at all time low as far as recruiting men and women into its elite group. While this dilemma is going on, one can only guess what the true reasons are that stop people from joining the military. Maybe it’s a lack of misunderstanding, a media influence or that Uncle that tells war stories that make you visualize soldiers getting killed. There are negative effects and positive effects of joining the military and by the end of this writing, one can put away speculation and know the truth about the effects of joining the military.

The thought of going to war and being away from family and friends is an emotional event that paralyzes all at times. Soldiers pack their bags knowing that there’s a chance of not coming back home and frequently embrace loved ones before departing for war or other duty stations around the world. Writing from personal experience, I’ve never been put in the position to go to war but have seen soldiers kiss their wives wondering when they will see each other again. This event in itself is enough to bring tears to any man or woman eyes and is a huge negative impact of joining the military. We must remind ourselves that going to war is the main job that all soldiers have raised their right hand for and spoken the words “I do”, meaning they will protect and defend United States of America at all costs. Being away from family for long periods of time will challenge a soldier mentally which can at times leads to mental stress. On holidays, particularly while serving over seas, a soldier can find him or herself depressed and having feelings of loneness. The people that soldiers love the most are back home continuing on family tradition, while a Veteran finds themselves secluded in woods eating MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat) and fighting insects away. The only good thing about being away from family members is the knowing that other soldiers are in the same predicament with you. Definitely, being away from friends and family members is no where near being positive when joining the military and if a soldier is not mentally prepared the results of their works can be a dishonorable discharge.

Preparing for war is what all soldiers are expected to perform in their daily routines while serving except those that luck up and receive jobs well related to office work. Soldiers prepare for war by doing exercises daily, visiting rifle ranges quite often and involving themselves with training segments consistently. Day in and day out, a person who’s enlisted find themselves up before the sun rise performing PT (Physical Training). Physical training consists of push-up, sit-ups and running that will transform any physical physique into a lean mean fighting machine. I believe exercising every day is a great effect of joining the military because you’re excelling your body limits and increasingly becoming more aware of how much your body can take during vigorous activities. While exercising is only a third of preparing for war, shooting at targets and participating in training programs is the milk and honey of soldier’s existence in the military.

Soldiers participating at rifle ranges will quickly find out that if they are a bad shooter because their days at the ranges will be long and treacherous. Most rifle ranges are in the open environment and at times have shelter for soldiers. The weather is ever changing and soldiers find ways of adapting to it. Being in cold weather on fire ranges gives frost bite to fingers and toes which is not welcomed in the mind of the soldier, for a soldiers’ trigger finger is desperately needed to qualify. Being in cold weather on fire ranges will have a few soldiers questioning their decision on enlisting in the military. Weather during extremely hot days has soldiers changing socks three times   [Article continued below...AffordableCoverageHealthIndividualInsurance]

a day because of feet sweating. Also, during these hot days, insects like scorpions and red ants enjoy keeping you company in the fox hole. This aggravating effect of insects biting you can be detrimental to shooting that three round burst that’s needed to qualify before you’re able to leave the range for that day. As you probably noticed, soldiers who have a hard time becoming a marksman find their patient being tested. This incredible attribute is essential to having a fulfilling career as an American Soldier. Remember the movies I spoke about in the beginning, “Hamburger Hill” and “Saving Private Ryan,” these movies portray the wrong idea of what the military is all about. I agree that war is definitely possible in a soldier’s day to day life in the armed forces. The media is well known for hyping the world with the latest negative news concerning our military and how lunatic a person might be if they join, but on the contrary, being in the military is like a 9 to 5 job. A soldier is works more than the time they have off. Time management skills is a must have trait to be an effective soldier. Training segments comes at moments notice and require soldier’s to spend their time wisely for this reason. Training segments like road marching is an event that requires persistence. The effects of walking 12 miles or so, causes feet to blister and challenges the strongest Veteran mentally. A road march is only one out of multiple training exercises that must be done on a consistent bases so staying physically and mentally fit is encouraged.

On a positive note, the benefits of joining the military are awesome. The military takes care of their soldiers by providing free meals daily and shelter for married and non-married soldiers to reside in while serving. Married soldiers are given additional money every month on top of salary to provide the needs for their families. All of the soldier’s medical and dental insurance is covered 100%. So even if a person enlisted in the military with an existing medical condition, they can receive excellent medical care upon signing your life over. I hate to use the words, “sign your life over,” but in reality that’s what a person is doing when raising that right hand to join the military. Another benefit of joining the military is that a person will have access to quality products without having to pay a single dime for taxes. Shopping for items in the military will save you literally thousands of dollars year because of not having to pay taxes. Compared to the civilian world, we literally spend thousands a year, whether it’s on gas, groceries or an essentials list of cosmetic items. Also, if one decides to leave the military, depending on a honorable or dishonorable discharge, a soldier may have enough money to enroll and pay for college or finance a home with VA benefits. These are just a few of the benefits that come along when enlisting in the military, not to mention traveling to different countries that you never dreamed of visiting. These benefits alone will have soldiers making careers in the armed forces.

The effect of joining the military has a positive effect and a negative effect on a soldier. Being away from family and friends with chances of going to war and having to deal with climate changes from time to time will have a soldier weary. On the other hand, if one can just survive the temporary stress and physical challenges that comes with joining the military, the benefits in the end are well worth the frustration of being an American Soldier.
